Hello, I begin the translation of the article. It is not perfect, please forgive me… I ‘ll try to continue as soon as possible:
p166:
Irresistible: he shot with the bests (Frears, Van Sant or Bertolucci) and made the box-office explode many times.
p167:
Uncompromising actor so handsome that you would damne yourself, a self-effacement particularly legendary such as it is in contrast with the actual exhibitionnism, Keanu Reeves embodies an inoxydable sex-symbol. He is alone in ignoring it.
p170:
Who is Keanu Reeves? Nobody knows it, even not himself, and it is good like this. Laconic, distant, reserved, more eloquent throught his silences than throught what he accepts to say, better actor when he makes a few than when he plays like a realistic comedian, Reeves remains the best mystery that Holywood maintains. Millionaire several times over with Matrix’s trilogy, jackpot of the Google’s years, Reeves is known for his cool, zen, lonely attitude, he celebrated the 25th year of his carreer. He is well placed to stay at the top for the following 10 years.
Android:
Close to the extraterrestrial Bowie in “the man who comes from elsewhere” by his androgynous coldness, Reeves excels in playing robotic characters. His inborn melancholy, his darkness and his minimalist acting (whose his critics wrongly associate with a lake of expressivity) work wonders in fantactic or science-fiction films. He will have shot a lot: Johnny Mnemonic from William Gibson’s novel, the Devil’s Advocate, Matrix trilogy, A Scanner Darkly from Philip K. Dick, or recently, The Day The Earth Stood Still. Without choosing or desiring it, Reeves has become the glorious personnifaication of a finally made future, a paradoxal heroe, nearly an hologram in Matrix more crazy instants, but still send out, faintly, from time to time, human signals: a tardive echo from already dead feeling. “The true foreign planet is Earth” (J.G. Ballard)
Beyrouth
It is in Lebanon, in Beirut, that he is born on September 2, 1964 from an English showgirl (who would become Dolly Parton or Alice Cooper’s costume designer) and a sino-hawaiian father, geologist. Keanu means cool breeze over the mountains. That what he says… His parents break up quickly and Keanu is carted following his mother’s moods and meetings (Sydney, New-York, Toronto). The father goes off the rails, and is arrested at Honolulu with a huge load of drug (heroin, cocain), and does a ten-year stretch. The fallen father and the triumphant son don’t see each other. It is one of Keanu’s fathers-in-laws that made him encounter Erwin Stoff who would land him his first contracts
Scars:
Often described as slightly self-destructive, Reeves likes nothing as driving fast on English bikes. His favorite model is the Black Norton Commando. He has 2 important crashes, the first in 1988, one night on a Californian boulevard. He will lay on the road during half an hour waiting for emergency aid coming and avoiding to be run over by trucks. He has broken ribs and his spleen is ruptured. This left him a great vertical scar on his abdomen after surgery. In 1996, a new motorcyle crash, a broken ankle. The second crash left him another scar on a leg. He will also undergo secondary effects of these multiple falls,a surgery of vertebral disks at neck level, so that he begins the intensive physical training to kung-fu for matrix with a neck-brace: “My body is a wreck
Dogstar:
One day, he has bought a bass because he was stopped in his tracks by the beauty of Peter Hook’s playing in Joy Division then in New Order. As the meetings with other musicians go by, he has finally created a band, Dogstars. He has gone on tour with Dogstar during 3 summers. The band plays a sort of grunge folk.
Hussar:
Before the role was given to Olivier Martinez, Reeves has been approach about portraying Angelo in The Hussar on the roof, the Jean Rappeneau’s film from Jean Giono’s novel. Reeves is crazy of the book, the character, and begins French lessons. Finally, he received a letter from the productor and learns he has been replaced. During an interview he says: “ I should have gone to France and asked Rappeneau ‘Why? Why? Why’”
Innocence:
“Innocence”, that is what Bertolucci said me when I asked him why I was chosen to portray Buddha. I thing that “innocence” means for him yought, ignorance, naivety, at the same time… I belive that this “innocence” is one of my dominant traits of character. If intimately I am innocent, that is because I am so lucky enough to know people who have nothing to do with show-business, because I am not big-headed and I don’t want to become a star.
Kinsky:
He is really enthousiastic for Klaus Kinsky’s autobiography, according to hin the encounter between “Ernest Hemingway and Georges Bataille”, in which the dutch writer totally mad, known for his play border-line for Wermer herzog (Aguire, Fitzcarroldo) writes: “I would like to have never been an actor! To hook and sell my body rather than sell my tears, my laughs, my pains, and my joys”. Reeves will also often cite Peter O Toole, Charles Laughton, Christopher Walke, Robert Duvall, among the actors he admires. Choices and references quite atypical for a hollywoodian star.
