Keanu Reeves recently spoke to MTV, updating us on the progress of his latest live-action passion project Cowboy Bebop.
The project appears to be perfect for Reeves, who loves his anime but also holds a special place for the Sci-Fi genre.Reeves revealed a bit about the projects status and as well as some thoughts on the upcoming adaption. He explained “we’ve got the rights, we’ve got a writer” and “he’s putting together a scene outline.” He also said the plot would focus on a fictional drug, Red Eye, which provides its users with superhuman reflexes and awareness.
As fans of the Japanese classic TV series know, “Bebop” follows a crew of bounty hunters traveling around the universe in the year 2071. Reeves hopes to play Spike Spiegel, one of these futuristic cowboys forced to pick up the slack after a population crash and hyperspace gateways have left law-enforcement unable to capture many of the galaxy’s most ruthless criminals.
“It’s got a Western quality, a Western film noir aspect to it,” Reeves said of why he’s such a big fan of Shinichiro Watanabe and Keiko Nobumoto’s groundbreaking series. “It’s got so much style to it, and that’s part of its appeal. That kind of Old West, bordertown, low-tech science fiction aspect.”

ACK! I knew they were talking about making another Bebop film, but now I’m going to have to shoot myself in the face because my efforts to kill everyone in Hollywood who expresses interest in Anime to Live Action adaption obviously isn’t working, lol. Maybe it’s just me, and maybe I’m not seeing the big picture, but Reeves is literally the last dude on the planet who should be Spike - this is coming from a long time Bebop fan. I’m not putting the guy down, but he keeps getting really miscast, though I do think he was a dead on Constantine!
I have to point out, though, that I’m a giant hypocrite because I’m 100% for live action adaptions of Y: The Last Man, Death Note and Kira that are all rumored to have been offered to Shia, so there you have it. I’m biased and I can’t be trusted! Lol!

I think I’m going to be sick. Live action Cowboy Bebop movie!? ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? Don’t get me wrong, there are Keanu Reeves movies that I like a lot (Devils Advocate, Bram Stokers Dracula, etc) but as a general rule of thumb some things can only be done tastefully when there animated. As a long time anime fan and a fan of Cowboy Bebop in particular, I can’t help but shudder at the thought of what Hollywood is about to do to one of the most original and well written stories I’ve ever come across (animated or otherwise).

I don’t know Cowboy Bebop. But I guess it will be the same thing when people decided to film “Constantine”, the fans was really upset about it.
Well, let’s wait.

sweet i got my answer. i have heard a lot of people freaking out over keanu playing spike. i was looking on the web to see if he was a fan of anime or cowboy bebop in general. i now think he will play this part well. a passion for the show it’s self will go a long way when playing spike. if someone truly loves the genre, it will help to make it a decent movie and not just a crap movie to make money. i’m like a little kid at christmas.
